Signs that it's a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad First Day on the Ward

1)  You need to comfort a crying team member before rounds have even started.
2)  You get your first patient complaint ever.  From a patient you haven't even met.
3)  In the middle of a code, the ICU attending asks "Is this the patient you wanted us to assess for admission?", and you reply "No, that would be her roommate."
4)  Two out of the three remaining team members end up crying before sign out rounds.
5)  You start crying the moment Joni Mitchell's River starts playing on the radio while driving home.

Can I go back to Hepatology now?

Oy! That sounds like one hell of a day! Sounds like you deserve a long hot bath and a shot of something strong/or a mug of tea.

Oh, dear. This sounds like a secret plan by Hepatology to make itself look really good. Hang in there.

Maybe you've gotten all the horrible out of the way on the first day and it'll get better from here? I'm trying to be optimistic.

Saw your post on OldMDGirl's blog with some great advice about electives and came to check out your blog. Adding you to my reader! Hope your Friday is better than today was!

OMDG - The second day is always a bit better, although there seems to be a bit of a curse on my ward that is making everyone want to get very sick. At least my crashing patients made it to the endoscopy suite/cath lab/ICU before they officially coded yesterday. (/bang head against the wall)

Physician activist - Indeed, quite the day. I was too tired for anything more than a mug of tea that night, but I enjoyed a few strong glasses of wine last night.

Kate P - If that's what it is, I wish Hepatology would stop trying so hard! It already looks good.

Thatgirl - I suspect that the medicine ward has no limit of horrible to throw at me!

Larissa - Thanks for visiting. Friday was slightly better, if only in that I know the patients a bit better and so could handle all the craziness that happened with a bit more poise than on Thursday.

Medstudentitis - Me too!
